Tags & Hashtags
Tags and hashtags help organize your content and make it discoverable. When you use hashtags in your posts or add tags to your content, others can find it through tag pages and interest browsing.
What are Tags and Hashtags?
Tags and hashtags are labels that help categorize content:
- Hashtags: Words or phrases prefixed with # (e.g., #photography, #writing)
- Tags: Categories or topics associated with your content
- Both help people discover your content
- Tags can become "interests" that people can follow
Using Hashtags in Posts
To add hashtags to your posts:
- Type # followed by a word or phrase (no spaces)
- Hashtags are automatically converted to clickable links
- Click a hashtag to see all posts with that tag
- You can use multiple hashtags in a single post
Example: "Just finished reading an amazing book! #reading #books #literature"
Hashtag Rules
Hashtags must follow these rules:
- Start with # followed by a letter
- Can contain letters, numbers, and underscores
- No spaces - use underscores for multi-word tags (e.g., #book_review)
- Case doesn't matter - #Photography and #photography are the same
- 6-digit hex codes (like #FF5733) are ignored to avoid confusion with CSS colors
Adding Tags to Blog Posts
For blog posts, you can add tags in two ways:
- Tag field: Enter tags in the tag field (comma or space separated)
- Hashtags in content: Hashtags in your blog post content are automatically added as tags
- Tags help categorize your blog posts
- Tagged blog posts appear on tag/interest pages
Adding Tags to Deep Dives
Deep dives can also be tagged:
- Add tags when creating or editing a deep dive
- Tags help people find your collections
- Tagged deep dives appear in relevant tag pages
- Use tags that describe the theme or topic of your collection
Tagging Photo Albums
Photo albums can be tagged too:
- Add tags when creating or editing an album
- Tags help others discover your photo collections
- Tagged albums appear on tag/interest pages
Discovering Content Through Tags
Tags help you discover content:
- Click any hashtag to see all posts with that tag
- Browse tag/interest pages to find content on specific topics
- Follow tags/interests to see related content in your feed
- Favorite tags to curate your feed
Following Tags and Interests
You can follow tags and interests:
- Click the heart icon on a tag/interest page to favorite it
- Favorited tags help curate your feed
- You'll see more content related to tags you've favorited
- Unfavorite tags anytime to stop seeing that content
See the "Favorites & Saving Content" article for more about how favorites work.
Tag Pages
Each tag has its own page showing:
- All posts with that tag
- Blog posts tagged with that tag
- Deep dives tagged with that tag
- Photo albums tagged with that tag
- Events tagged with that tag
Tag pages help you explore content around specific topics or interests.
Best Practices for Tags
- Be specific: Use specific tags rather than overly broad ones
- Use relevant tags: Tag content with tags that actually relate to it
- Don't over-tag: Use a reasonable number of tags (3-5 is usually good)
- Use common tags: Tags others are likely to search for
- Be consistent: Use the same spelling/capitalization for the same tag
- Check existing tags: See what tags others are using for similar content
Tags vs. Hashtags
On LavishMade:
- Hashtags in posts: Automatically become tags when you use # in your post content
- Tag fields: You can also add tags directly in tag fields (for blog posts, deep dives, albums)
- Both work the same: Whether you use #hashtag or add "hashtag" in a tag field, they function the same
- Case insensitive: #Photography, #photography, and "photography" are all the same tag
Tagging Events
Events can also be tagged:
- Add tags when creating an event
- Tagged events appear on tag/interest pages
- Helps people find events related to their interests
- Use tags that describe the event type or topic
Troubleshooting
Common issues and solutions:
- Hashtag not working: Make sure it starts with # and a letter, with no spaces
- Tag not appearing: Check spelling and make sure the tag was saved
- Too many tags: Use a reasonable number - 3-5 tags is usually sufficient
- Tag not clickable: Make sure you're using the # symbol before the tag
Tip: Tags and hashtags are powerful tools for discovery. Use them thoughtfully to help others find your content and to find content you're interested in. Don't spam tags - use relevant ones that actually describe your content!
