Publishing Settings
Publishing settings allow you to configure default privacy and sharing preferences for your content. These settings help you control how your posts, blog posts, and other content are shared by default.
Accessing Publishing Settings
To access your publishing settings:
- Go to Account Settings
- Click "Publishing Settings" in the navigation
- You'll see options for default privacy and content sharing
Default Privacy Settings
You can set default visibility for your content:
- Visible to All: Your content is public and visible to everyone
- Visible to Friends: Only your friends can see your content
- Visible to Subscribers: Only people who subscribe to you can see your content
- Visible to Paid Subscribers: Only people with paid subscriptions can see your content
- Visible to Self: Only you can see your content (private)
These defaults apply when creating new content, but you can override them for individual posts or blog posts.
Content Sharing Preferences
Control how your content can be shared:
- Allow reposts: Let others repost your content to their feeds
- Allow sharing: Control whether your content can be shared externally
- Default settings: Set defaults that apply to new content
Stripe Connect Setup
If you want to monetize your content:
- Connect Stripe: Set up Stripe Connect to accept payments
- Required for paid content: Stripe is required for paid subscriptions and monetization
- One-time setup: Connect your Stripe account once, use it for all monetization
- Secure: Stripe handles all payment processing securely
To connect Stripe:
- Go to Publishing Settings
- Find the "Payment Processing" section
- Click "Connect to Stripe"
- Complete the Stripe onboarding process
- Once connected, you can create paid subscription tiers
Subscription Tiers
In Publishing Settings, you can manage your subscription tiers:
- Free tier: Always available - allows free subscriptions
- Monthly tier: Paid monthly subscription (requires Stripe)
- Yearly tier: Paid yearly subscription (requires Stripe)
- Founding Member tier: Special one-time paid tier (requires Stripe)
See the "Paid Subscriptions" article in Social & Safety for more details about subscription tiers.
Overriding Defaults
Publishing settings are defaults - you can override them:
- When creating a post, you can choose a different visibility setting
- When publishing a blog post, you can set specific privacy
- Each piece of content can have its own privacy settings
- Defaults just make it faster to create content with your preferred settings
Best Practices
- Set appropriate defaults: Choose defaults that match your typical content privacy needs
- Review regularly: Check your publishing settings periodically
- Use privacy wisely: Consider who should see your content by default
- Connect Stripe early: Set up Stripe Connect if you plan to monetize
- Test settings: Create a test post to verify your defaults work as expected
Monetization Features
Publishing Settings is where you set up monetization:
- Stripe Connect: Required for accepting payments
- Subscription tiers: Create and manage paid subscription tiers
- Pricing: Set prices for your subscription tiers
- Monetization status: See if monetization is enabled for your account
Monetization features may require approval or be available to select creators. Check your Publishing Settings to see if monetization is available for your account.
Troubleshooting
Common issues and solutions:
- Can't connect Stripe: Make sure you have a valid Stripe account and complete the onboarding
- Defaults not applying: Check that you're using the defaults when creating content
- Monetization not available: Monetization may require approval or be in limited release
- Settings not saving: Make sure you click "Save" after making changes
Tip: Set your publishing defaults to match how you typically want your content shared. This saves time when creating content and ensures consistency. You can always override defaults for specific posts or blog posts!
