Changing Your Display Name

Your display name is how you appear across LavishMade. It's shown on your profile, posts, comments, and throughout the platform. Your display name also determines your profile URL.

How to Change Your Display Name

  1. Go to your profile edit page or Account Settings
  2. Find the "Display Name" or "Display Name & URL" section
  3. Enter your new display name
  4. Click "Save" or "Update Profile"

Your display name change will be reflected immediately across LavishMade.

Display Name Requirements

Your display name must:

  • Be between 3 and 50 characters long
  • Only include letters, numbers, spaces, and these special characters: . - _ ' &
  • Not be blank or contain only spaces

Examples of valid display names:

  • Jane Smith
  • jane_smith
  • Jane.Smith
  • Jane & Co.

Rate Limiting

To prevent abuse, display name changes are rate-limited:

  • You can change your display name once every 24 hours
  • After changing your display name, you'll need to wait 24 hours before changing it again
  • The system will show you how long until you can make another change

This limit helps maintain consistency and prevents confusion from frequent name changes.

How Display Name Affects Your URL

Your display name determines your profile URL:

  • Your profile URL is based on your display name (e.g., /u/jane-smith)
  • When you change your display name, your URL may change
  • Your old URL will redirect to your new URL for a period of time
  • Old links to your profile will continue to work through redirects

Important: If you share your profile URL frequently, be aware that changing your display name will change your URL. Consider this before making changes.

Display Name vs. Username

On LavishMade:

  • Display Name: The name shown across the platform (what you can change)
  • Username/Slug: Automatically generated from your display name for your URL
  • You don't have a separate username - your display name powers everything
  • Changing your display name updates your username/slug automatically

Where Your Display Name Appears

Your display name is shown in:

  • Your profile header
  • Posts and blog posts you create
  • Comments you make
  • Friend requests and notifications
  • Search results
  • Your profile URL

Best Practices

  • Choose carefully: Since you can only change it once every 24 hours, pick a name you're happy with
  • Be consistent: Use the same name across platforms if you want to be easily found
  • Keep it appropriate: Your display name represents you on the platform
  • Consider your audience: Think about how your name appears to others
  • Test the URL: After changing, check that your new profile URL works correctly

What Happens When You Change Your Display Name

When you change your display name:

  • Your name updates immediately across the platform
  • Your profile URL may change
  • Your old URL redirects to your new URL
  • All your existing content shows your new display name
  • People searching for your old name may still find you
  • The change is logged in your account history

Troubleshooting

Common issues and solutions:

  • Can't change display name: Check if you've changed it within the last 24 hours. Wait until the rate limit expires.
  • Name not updating: Refresh the page or clear your browser cache
  • Invalid characters: Make sure you're only using allowed characters (letters, numbers, spaces, . - _ ' &)
  • Name too short/long: Display name must be between 3 and 50 characters
  • URL not working: Old URLs redirect automatically. Give it a moment, or use your new URL.
