"Call of the Waxen Tongue" is a short piece I wrote for Factory Obscura's Halloween procession in OKC this year, based on the themes of the event and the chant melody by Lindsey Cox, both about walking through the night to call forth light. The "waxen tongue" in my thing refers to an unlit candle wick, a symbolic tongue without the flicker of flame. The piece begins with whole notes as the procession arrives to my station, then goes into the body of the piece, the "call," then transitions directly into the chant melody as the French horn joins the procession. I see this as the wick being lit by the community flame of the procession. But it can also be rehearsed in a park, as you see here, and maybe in contexts like this, the music is the flame that lights other candles in the wild (you'll see why if you watch to the end).
