An animated adaptation of Richard Adams' novel, about a pair of dogs (Snitter and Rowf) who escape from a research laboratory and try to survive in the wild with the help of a cunning fox (The Tod). The lab director tries to keep the escape quiet, but as an increasing number of sheep are found killed, word leaks out, together with rumors that the dogs might be plague carriers.

I guess this came out 4 years before When the Wind Blows. They're not about the same specific issue, but they're awfully similar in animation, tone, structure, naivete, and existentialist themes. I like that film better for its more endearing dialogue & smaller scope. Too similar for a double feature, but I think they make good companion pieces of scientific angst in the 1980s as seen through their everyman victims.
