Career defining work from its director & lead actor that breaks the fourth wall so hard, I think the seventh wall in another dimension got broken, too. At first, I understood the criticisms: it's loud, unsubtle, messy, not as clever as it thinks it is, a complete misfire. But on second watch, all of those complaints work in favor of the metanarrative when you appreciate the full scope of the behemoth it tackles. It's a satire of satire, an intellectual takedown of intellectual takedowns. That it gets caught in its own crosshairs becomes the point. Inarritu writes plenty loopholes into his film that ensure every criticism can be explained away as an artistic choice or self-aware commentary, which does make Digger a difficult work of art to wrangle. It seems to stand for everything, hence nothing, but it's truth, actually, that it seeks. What it finds is that truth itself cannot be found in film or narrative, only myriads of perspective, and our conflation of the two is what misleads us.
